Dopey Training Week 1 Recap

HI! How are you guys?  I just wrapped up week 1 of Marathon/Dopey training.  I also wrapped up my first (official) week back at school.  The students start Wednesday so I still have a few things to do around the classroom.  I received a fun package from Uncommon goods so I was able to geek out for a few minutes and sanitize my phone.  I will have a review about their site later this week.

Such a nerd!!

This weeks training went surprisingly well.  3x before work I was able to run and I am hoping to continue that even with the earlier start time once the students come back.  Instead of having to be home by 7am to shower and be out of the house by 7:30, next Wednesday I will have to be out of the house by 6:30.  One the weather starts cooling down and the feels like is not more than 108 degrees I can start running in the evening.

Dopey Training Week 1:

Monday: Easy day consisted of a 2.5 mile slow hot walk :) then 21 day fix pilates. I thought it was necessary to not set an alarm for my last official day off.  Totally worth it

Tuesday: 6.5 mile 12:16 pace. Tuesdays are normally tempo, but I thought it was more important to note trip over my feet at 0’dark thirty.

Wednesday: 3 mile recovery run- 11:50 pace- I was super happy that I negative split that run

Thursday: Speed Work 7 miles 2x400, 2x800, 2x1200 with same revery in-between ( except for the 1200 because I was beat!  overall pace 11:42

Friday: Rest day!- how glorious

Saturday: Long Run with Team.  8 miles 11:55ish pace and negative split

does the view get any better?
Sunday: 3 mile recovery 12:33 pace.  I was surprised how sore my legs were.

total (running) miles: 27.5

1 strength training day.

How did your week go?

I had to come home on Thursday and take a nap.  I also wish I would have gotten a true tempo run it but I am till very happy with how this week went.

July Stats and Thoughts

To be honest, I am very sad for July to end.  It means it is time to go back to work for good.  I went back three half days last week and teachers officially go back August 2.  Students are back August 10, sorry Behn- the crankiness begins.

While I have a few extra minutes here are a few things about July.

So what's next?

So what’s next?

Since my last marathon in December of 2014, I really haven’t done much in terms of races.  I got burnt out. I was doing race after race because I was in shape. I was using the races as long runs, and apparently trying to run all the miles!  Gasparilla, as fun as it was, was probably the tipping point of races; 2 days- almost 30 miles.  I was tired and I took about a year off of running, completely. I was loving Orange Theory Fitness and on my wedding day I felt happy and confident.

Post OTF Bod :)

I ran two half marathons last season and didn’t hit my goals.  I trained well, I just don’t think my body is where it used to be.  My expectations were high, the conditions weren't perfect, eh, life happens. Last year as my first time not training for a marathon since my first one in 2011.

Post Goofy Stuggle in 2014- Ready for it again

I am finally ready to train for a marathon again! This marathon is a little different than my last one.  Not only is it a marathon over a weekend, I am also taking on the 5k, 10k, half marathon, and then the marathon.

I keep getting the question, “Why would you do that to yourself?”

I am doing it to help raise funds for the leukemia and Lymphoma society.  (<--- Click to DONATE)  One day I will be luckily enough not to have to run to raise money, but to run because there is a cure for ALL cancer.

Post Goofy Stuggle

I am also doing it for me.  I needed a “fun” race to get into without a time goal.  I have to love running without a time goal because if I do not hit that time goal, I beat myself up too much and that is not what running should be about. The niche of team in training is like no other.  I cannot wait to get back out there with my team!
One of my proudest accomplishments- Goofy!

I have been working with Abby trying to get my speed back and base building!  I am excited for the official start of training later this month!

What has been the most fun race you have run?

Mine was definitely Goofy in 2013 (or whenever that was)

What did you do for the Holiday Weekend?
We went up to Jacksonville for the day then stayed local on Monday.  We have a scaredy cat!

The end of summer..

What going on with me you ask?

Nothing like meeting up with a few bloggers to get your creative juices flowing.  The last time I posted was right after school and now I post again when school is about to begin.  I had the whole summer to write but I had no desire to turn my computer on.  As much as I always enjoyed blogging, after i met more and more people blogging I felt like I was trying to compete or keep up with people and that is not why I started this blog.  I started this blog to journal my first half marathon then first marathon.  I needed to refocus.  Last night at The Sweet Tooth Cakery made me miss blogging and sharing my thoughts so hopefully I will muster up the time and energy to blog on my own watch.  Also, even though I had the whole summer off I did attempt some wedding and house projects.

I saw Meghan’s post a while back about what she is currently doing and I liked the format and wanted to make it my own :)

currently entertaining:  The thought of having to go back to school in just a few days.  I had a great summer but I can use a few more weeks!  This past week I entertained two of my girlfriends!  We had delicious turkey tacos and one friend brought her 3 month old!! She is just the cutest!!! I also had the thought, instead of getting married I can just have babies..NO?  I wish I was a better picture taker because this would be a good place to add that picture!

Take me back please!
currently loving: Daytime TV!  I do not watch TV during the school year but man, I have a schedule until 5pm!  I seriously do not know what I am going to do once school starts.  DVRing isn’t worth it because I won’t ever watch it!!  Seriously!  Today show, Kelly and Michael, Hoda and Kathy Lee, The Chew, The Doctors, Dr. OZ, then Ellen.  Behn and I have been watching Law and Order: SVU before bed every night.  It’s lovely! I am loving getting in workout and not having a time crunch..  I am also loving morning smoothies!  I am the worst at fueling after a workout and I have had two lovely smoothies this week..delicious :)

currently working on: Marathon training.  Marathon training started this week and it’s going well!  I also have to work on my classroom next week so I should start putting things together and make a Walmart or Michaels trip!

currently thinking: Do I really have to go back to work?
How lucky I am to have a few friends who will meet me in the morning to get some speed work in or long runs in!
I am also thinking how I don’t want to do laundry but its hot out and my workout clothes are pretty nasty!

currently looking forward to: Winter Break!  Just kidding :)
We are looking at a venue on Saturday and Behn is pretty excited about it.  I hope it is reasonably priced because this whole budget thing is cramping my style.  Unfortunately due to unforeseen events, our budget was pretty much cut in half and my dream beach wedding at a resort will probably be thrown out.   I am thinking maybe a private beach ceremony.
Anyone have any fun idea?

currently wearing: Maxi skirts!  It has taken me years to find a maxi skirt that fits me because I am shorter than the average and have a tummy so nothing fits me currently.  I saw Meghan had a cute one and I stalked her for it!  I stocked up.  I am also loving pajamas because only for a few more days I can wear them ALL day!!

currently reading: I just finished two books while I was on vacation and currently in the middle of Wild, by Cherly Strayed.  I have a few other books by James Petterson out from the library and have to pick up another one today by Bette Midler.

currently watching: daytime TV!! See above :)

What would you add to a list of things you're currently doing?

How did your wedding planning go?  What tips do you have for me?    I am so lucky to have a great support system and so many people giving me ideas.  I think I am on idea overload though!

NYCM Training: Week 5

Another week of Marathon Training has flown by.  This week wasn't as great as I wanted it to be, there were a few ups and downs but I am determined to make my last week before school starts to be great!  July was a great month so I am hoping to replicate that!

This week I am once again linking up with Meghan and Kat!  Yay, two weeks in a row, what has come over me?

Monday: 7/29
4 easy miles.  11:56 Pace.  The first 1.5 were great.  I wanted to go to the local Fit2Run group run but as I was about to leave it started to lightning and thunder.  I went for a run around the neighborhood when it finished.  My stomach started cramping and was locked out of the gate!  It was grand.

Tuesday: 7/30
Cross training.  I cross trained, yay!  If any of you have followed my training before I am very good at not cross training.  That is another goal this training cylce, to incorporate cross training.  I went to the pool at the gym and swam a mile.  36:16 minutes.

Wednesday: 7/31
7 easy miles. 11:444 pace
Went around the neighborhood again.  Went after the rain and the mosquitos were out in full force!

Thursday:8/1
This could be forgotten.  My plan called for 5 miles at MGP with a warm up and cool down.  I tried this run three times.  I first woke up at 6 to run.  I got .5 miles and my stomach was cramping so I walked home.  I went back to sleep, looked for houses and then went to the gym. At the gym I warmed up again, put it to GP and my chest hurt.  It hurt to breathe.  I called it quits and drove to Bayshore.  I ran 2 miles under GP and called it quits because I just couldn't go.  I walked back and had a scenic view of of the beautiful houses.  I think my body is rebelling because it hasn't ever actually followed a training plan completely.  This is where I freak out because I have to start work, which  I will need to drive at least an hour each way, and work way too many hours a day.

Friday: 8/2
Rest day! Hallelujah!

The only part I like about Bayshore

Saturday: 8/3
10.65 miles
This was supposed to be my 14 miler down Bayshore down with TEAM.  Unfortunately, I went to bed and woke up with a stomach ache.  The humidity got the best of me, my ankle was killing me and it was not my day.  With all that being said, I was maintaining a pretty good pace for running by myself.  Too bad it ended too quickly!

Sunday: 8/4
Rest day take two!

NYCM 2013 Training: Week 4

How is it 2 days before August and I am already a month into marathon training?  Where has the time gone?

We have less than 99 days until November 3 when I toe the start line with thousands of my closest running friends!

This week I am linking up with Meghan and Kat.  I am really excited to link up again because I missed these weekly recaps.  Unless I am training for something, I have nothing to recap :(

Week 4 in Review

Sunday 7/21- 1 mile swim as a recovery from Saturdays 11 miles

Monday 7/22 Easy 4 miler

Tuesday 7/23 Unplanned rest day due to time restraints

Wednesday 7/24 7 ugly miles.  If you saw on Daily mile, this was not my day.  I mentally checked out before it started because I wasn't able to meet the people I anticipated to run with.  I almost went home but pounded it out anyway.  There was much more walking than I planned but they got done.

Thursday 7/25 20 minutes tempo run.  This was pretty rock star :)
6 miles on the bike with mom

Friday 7/26 Rest day

Saturday 7/28 13 miles which 8 were bridges at Ringling Bridge

I took this from my instagram.  My first ice bath of the season!!
Sunday 7/29 1 mile on treadmill, 20 minutes on a bike. 1 hour of yoga

Dad foam rolling
This makes for a pretty sure Genna :)

I hope everyone has a great week!  I have almost hit 100 miles for the month.  I haven't seen those numbers since December !!

24 days in training

*Warning* This post may be a little disjointed and don't mind the random pictures everywhere, my computer stinks!!

24 days later and I finally sitting down to write a post about my next marathon.  If you follow me on facebook, twitter, instagram, or daily mile, or even my blog, then you already know I am training for the 2013 New York City Marathon.  My emotions for this race are everywhere.  I am excited, nervous, and ready for it to be over (sad to say).  There was so much hype last year about this race and with it being cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy I feel as if I am in a rut.  I was already up there, I picked up my packet, went shopping, and in an instant, it was cancelled.  It is hard for me to be overly excited because what if that happens again.  The weather and other events may be out of my control but the training, that is not, and that is my main reason for writing this post.

Getting my pedicure right before training starts before my toes fall off with some leisurely reading

I "officially" started training July 1 giving me about 16 weeks to train.  I didn't come in with much of a base that I anticipated due to tendinitis in my ankles.  The lack of running is also why you all haven't seen many posts from me in a while.  The tendinitis came about right after my amazing PR at the Sarasota First Watch Half Marathon.  If you know my track record with training and following a schedule, I may not be the best of it.  I am determined to rock NY! Surprisingly, I have only missed 2 runs and they were due to a really sunburned butt and I knew putting on a running skirt was not going to be fun.  I couldn't even sleep on my back.  With that being said, except for today and one other run, I hit every run!

I am very lucky to have off for the first month of training.  It is allowing me to set a routine.  Once school begins, I will be out of the house by 5:15 which doesn't allow for a run in the morning, but I will make it home to run in the evening.  I have recruited my boss to run a half marathon so I can't wait to have a running partner on that side of town along with many other runners I know up there.  I will be calling them in for reinforcements! Training this year has been done alone for the most part, I miss my running buddies but I live so far from most of them.  I was finally able to meet up with my BRF Christa and she pushed me!  We did unexpected hill training which is always fun and torture.  This heat is truly something else.  I am thinking about getting some type of water pack back such a a camelbak or the nathan hydration packs.  Any thoughts?  I do not like carrying stuff n my hands and the fuel belts give me a stomach ache.
The best post race treat! A popsicle after 9 miles.  5 of which were the Run for Pride with NYRR

My goals for this training cycle and race is to have fun and get back into running shape.  I miss when 10 min miles were easy, now I struggle with 11 min miles for 3 mile miles.  Have fun come race day and not want to kill myself.  If I have to set a time goal, it is 4:59:59.  Truthfully, I am not sure it is going to happen at New York due to the bridges and my lack of base before training.  I hope to update my blog weekly on my runs.  Once school starts again, who knows what will happen.

I hope everyone is having a great summer!

What are you goals this summer?  How do you power through the heat?

Friday Leters: Bon Voyage

Dear Friday, This week went so quick since I have been preparing for a long trip.  It is bitter sweet that you are here already.  I am excited to go away but I don't feel at all prepared.  I have been so focused on moving and the end of school that I didn't prep.  Here I am, off for a month,

Dear Readers, Don't be surprised that you don't see me for another month.  I know the last few months I have been posting sporadically but hey, that is life.  I hope once I come back from being away, I will have more time and the motivation to post at NYC Marathon training will begin!

Dear Vacation, I am ready for you!  First Trip is to New York City for the day.  Sunday I head to Israel with Birthright.  I will say more on that when I return.  I am really excited as I have only heard wonderful things.  I hope I packed enough, but not too much.  I feel like I will be roughing it, I am sure I will not be.  After Israel for 10 days its back to New York City to spend time being a tourist again, and running through my beloved Central Park.  I do have two 5 mile races actually that weekend.  After some time in NY its down to Cape May for the remainder of the week.  I can't wait to spend July 4th having a BBQ, riding bikes and soaking up the sun, oh, and of course shopping!

Dear Airlines, please don't let there be any delays and hopefully my suitcase isn't too heavy!!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Do you have any vacations planned this summer?
Have you or know anyone who has gone on a birthright trip?  What should I expect?

Weekly Workout Recap & Goofy Training Week 9 & Taper

I cannot believe that 9 weeks have passed with Training for this insane event Called the Disney Goofy and a Half challenge.  What was I thinking when I signed up for this with Team in Training?

Oh that is right, I will be in great shape after the New York City Marathon and this will be a breeze.  Well, I was wrong!

According to my DailyMile acount, this week was a great week!  I will have to agree with it.

I am secretly loving taper week.  Some runs were more difficult than other but that 5 miles on Monday was amazing.  I had off this week so it was a lot more convenient to get my miles in.  For the last week of training I have to go back to work sadly.  I only have 8 miles on the schedule during the week.  I will probably do 4 of them :)

Here is a rundown of my runs:
*Monday: 5 miles @ 9:48 pace.  I am not sure where that came from but it really helped with my mind in terms of getting faster.  Something I have been struggling with for a while now.
*Tuesday: New years Day, that was rough.  It hurt and was hard to maintain the 10:53 pace
*Thursday: 6 miles at 11:19.  It was hot and 100% humidity.  It was hard, my legs felt it.
*Saturday: 8 lovely miles with my favorite TEAM! 10:34 pace.  I was ecstatic about that.  I cannot wait to be done with Disney so I can truly begin working on getting faster!!

I am hoping I have the time to blog this week and share my goals for Disney.  As I have to back to back races, I intent to go in to it for "FUN" but I may have a goal up my sleeve for the Marathon portion considering how terrible my first marathon was.

How do you set your goals for marathons?
How do you pace yourself?
Have you run with a pace group and what what your thoughts?

Weekly workout + Goofy Training week 5

How can you tell like if a little crazy, when you cannot remember what week of training you just completed.

The last two weeks were a little crazy and I got sick so that didn't help too much with the whole training for a 39.3 mile race.  With that, I also made a few race decisions about to upcoming year.

Grab a button and link up your workouts anytime this week! Leave a comment and I will stop by and say hello :)

I am going to roll the last two weeks workouts into one short and sweet post, why?  Because it won't take too long.

I wish I knew how to make running a priority with a new job, new classes, and new responsibilities.  I can't wait until next semester when it is time to redo many lessons, but not start from the beginning for three classes.  I can't wait until my lease is up so I can move closer to work.  (Sorry for my vent session and thank you for listening)

Last week, training week 4, I was extremely busy with being back from break and getting everything in order, and just when the week was calming down, I got sick.  I was so ready to do 2 back to back runs and neither happened.  I was supposed to run the Brandon Half Marathon on December 2nd, but was smart and pushed it to the 5k.  The day before, I was supposed to do another long run of 14 miles but when all I wanted to do was leave work, I knew that wasn't going to happen.  I actually slept over 11 hours and night and believe that is what my body needed.  I was sad I couldn't do the Brandon Half, but was hurting during the 5k, it was hard to breathe, I stopped twice to blow my nose, and just wasn't feeling right.  I did PR though for my 5k, so I wonder how much better I could have done without a rotten cold.

The following week, I started to feel better and was still very busy (I have to spend many afternoons after school practicing for a secret Pep Rally Thing a ma jig)- It will be over This week.

Tuesday was track practice where I was able to get a mile done in 9:20.  Yay for getting faster :)

I had a few unanticipated rest days due to work.  Friday I went home right after work to get my runs in, I did it, but body wouldn't go so I turned around early :(

Saturday was a long run of 19 miles.  I had a good friend push me along for 14 of those miles until I felt bad that she was taking it slow with me!  I told her to take off and I was my slow self and powered till the end.

I hope that my body learns to move again, and I see improvements in my run.  At this point I am starting to get down about Disney :( I have to remember that I am not doing this one for time because it's two back to back runs. I want to have fun, even though I would love a time goal!

How did your workouts go this week?
How do you get over the mental hump?

Women's Half Marathon Race Recap

WHM and NYC Marathon Bibs
I am not really sure how to start with this recap expect for saying I still have a grin on my face.
I PR'd!  And it wasn't a little PR either!

This weekend I had 29 miles on deck, but if you have been following me, you would know my stomach sometimes likes to cooperate.  Saturday morning, I was up bright and early for my 16 miles.  I was actually very excited to be doing back to back long runs because I am doing Goofy with the Leukemia and Lymphoma society (have you donated yet)?  Unfortunately, it did not pan out as well as I had wished.  I made it 4.5 out before my stomach really began to hurt, I walked back because running made it hurt.  Luckily this time, it was just pain and I wasn't running for a bathroom.  On the way back, my IT band was screaming!  I didn't know what to do!  I was limping and couldn't walk.  I ced and foam rolled at least three times on Saturday.
Because I still had 9 miles on my legs, I wasn't sure how a half marathon would pan out.  Would I run before or after the race to add more miles, would my stomach hold up.  Should I try to PR, should I run with a pace group?  I really had no idea what Sunday would hold for me.  All I knew what this was going to be a fun run!  After going to the expo and talking to my friends, I was just ready for a good time.

Sunday Morning came and my alarm was set for 4am.  I quickly threw on my clothes, which included my Team shirt.  I grabbed a bottle of water, a bag of ice so I can ice my bum on the way to the race start.  I decided to get there around 5:30 so I would not have to mess and bother with parking or traffic. When I got there, I met Meghan who picked me up some compression socks because I could not find mine, and I found they actually really work, or it is just my mind. After we met, she was off to run 4 miles BEFORE 13 for a total of 17.5 for the day! She is pretty rock star!  She went for a run, and I quickly ran to the bathroom at the Hilton where my TNT peeps would be. I started my pre run warmup, but knew I was going too fast so I stopped, texted Pete and met my peeps.  I made it a half a mile in less than 5 minutes.  Too quick to me. I was talking to Pete, who was the race coach for the day.  He was actually the one who got me to the finish line of my first half, and helped me PR Sunday my running me in faster than I could imagine.
GO TEAM!
Story time and being my typical self
After some pictures, we headed to the corrals and was ready to go.  Once I was there, I was peeking around for some friends, but unfortunately, I was unable to find any.  I waited, tried to keep warm, and chatted with some strangers.  At 6:58, the national anthem was sung, and at 7:00 the first wave was out, and we were all on our way.

This course was beautiful, flat, and fast.

This is actually the only race (besides the Jungle Bell 5k) which I have ran more than once.  That is how much I loved this race the first time.
It runs along the water, beautiful houses, Mirror Lake, through Tropicana Field where the Rays plays, and it is also very spectator friendly which is always helpful.

Miles 1-3: My body was playing mind games with me.  I started off what I thought would be too fast.  My muscles and body were getting warmed up and I guess I learned that it takes me a few miles to get into the groove.  At mile 1, I looked at my watch and saw a low number. AHH, was going through my head.  I wanted to slow down and not die too quickly.  At around mile 3, the 2:30 pace group caught up to me, and I was thinking about sticking with them.  I had this TOP SECRET goal of 2:30, but didn't plan to hit it until my March half marathon.  I also knew I had my team in training family at mile 3 which kept me going!  I really love having spectators along the course.

Mile 4-8: Went through snell Isle which was beautiful.  I was able to stay with the pace group, and actually got a little ahead of them.  I didn't want to push to hard and burn out.  That is what I was thinking the whole time.  At about mile 5, I broke off and made my way through the cobbled streets and over to the pier.  It was great seeing Caroline so many times!  At the pier, I ran into my handy dandy Pete!  The wind was bad, but I didn't find it horrendous as most people are talking about.  Don't get me wrong, it wasn't easy, but I also knew it would be at my back soon enough.  Pete and I were talking when the 2:30 pace group came up behind us at mile 8, what this would mean if I stayed with them, etc.  At this point, it was go big or go home.  I chowd down on a powergel and we were off.  At this point I was still feeling pretty good and couldn't believe my pace.

Mile 9-11:  At this point, things were a little rough.  We headed up hill!  I started to fall behind the pace group.  I wanted to walk, I wanted to take a break.  Knowing I could run a marathon, mentally helped me though this.  Knowing I had my AMAZING Run Tampa crew at mile 9.6, allowed me to keep going.  It was so so so nice to see their smiling faces.  Hearing them cheer for "me".  When Tori gave me Yellow gatorade when I needed it instead of the orange (I hate orange flavored stuff).  That it was running is all about.  That is an amazing community.  After that, I was able to catch back up with the pacer, Don, and I felt like a million bucks.  We only had a 5k left.  This mentality doesn't really work for me on a normal basis, but it did today.  I know, just a little further till we hit the trop, were on flat land, and then it is all downhill.  Through the trop, I kept my pace and chatted up with some other ladies.

Mile 12-13.1:  Yes! Downhill.  I was told we were about a 1 minute to a minute and a half ahead of schedule.  I had this even more secret goal in my head, that by the end of the year, I wanted to run under a 2:28.  (A 2:28 was what my X ran his first race and taunted me with it, yes, that is one of the many reasons we are not together, and couldn't be happier about that!)  I held steady for mile 12, and 13, we were off.  Don gave us permission, if we had it in us, go for it.  Don runs a 1:35 half.  No big deal.   At 12.5, I saw Pete! He was going to run me in, I asked him, he asked me my goal, and we pushed!  At about 12.75, my watched beeped at we were at 13. "F", why aren't we there yet.  He commented how fast I was going, and it helped that he was there to push me!  My body hasn't run that fast in a race.  I followed his lead, I crossed that finish line in under 2:28!

If you look back at my Halloween Halfathon recap, you see my finish time was between 2:35-2:36 and change.  That leaves me with a 9-10 minute PR.

Here are my splits:

I cannot believe I have not one mile over 12:00, yet along the "slowest" was 11:46.  My fastest was my last mile, which was a first for me.  I hit paces under 11:00 which is a first.

I am extrmemly happy with this run, especially after having 9 miles on my legs the day before.  I really pushed myself.  At points I didn't think I could do it, but knew if I can go a little further, I could.

Oh, more bling to add!
